Infrastructure Investment to Future-Proof Iconic Eumundi Markets
One of the Sunshine Coast’s most iconic tourism destinations is receiving a major infrastructure upgrade, with significant drainage works now underway at Eumundi Markets.
The project is designed to address longstanding flooding issues, improve site resilience and protect the future of one of Queensland’s most visited attractions. The Eumundi Markets attract around 1.2 million visitors annually and contribute approximately $54 million in visitor expenditure to the regional economy.
Expected to take a further six to eight weeks to complete, weather permitting, the works will replace ageing drainage infrastructure and improve water management across the site, helping ensure the continued success of the world-famous markets for decades to come.
Major Drainage Upgrade for Eumundi Markets
Experience Eumundi General Manager Mark Cameron said the project represents an important investment in the long-term sustainability of the markets and the broader Sunshine Coast visitor economy.
“While visitors come to Eumundi for the atmosphere, creativity and unique experiences, there is a significant amount of infrastructure working behind the scenes to support that experience,” Mr Cameron said.
“These works may not be the most visible investment we make, but they are among the most important. Upgrading the site’s drainage network will help address historical flooding challenges and improve the long-term resilience of the markets.”
Supporting the Sunshine Coast Visitor Economy
The infrastructure upgrade follows the release of an independent economic impact report that identified Eumundi Markets as one of South East Queensland’s most significant tourism and economic assets.
The report found the markets support more than 1,000 jobs and generate millions of dollars in economic activity each year, reinforcing their importance to the Sunshine Coast tourism industry and regional business community.
Mr Cameron said ongoing investment in infrastructure was essential to protecting the future of the markets and the benefits they deliver to local businesses, stallholders and visitors.
“The recent report reinforced just how important Eumundi Markets are to the Sunshine Coast visitor economy,” he said.
“Projects like this ensure we continue to invest in the infrastructure needed to support visitors, stallholders and the local community, while preserving the experience that has made Eumundi a must-visit destination for generations.”
